EPISODE III : THOUGHTS, SCENES & RUMOURS - an early scene by scene

STAR WARS

EPISODE III

[The title is not yet known, and will probably be revealed sometime in 2004. As Lucas likes his titles to echo B-movie titles, don't expect a 'deep' title. It may reveal the nature of the story (a la Attack of the Clones or The Empire Strikes Back)]

[The film will begin with the end of the Clone Wars - which have been going for the three years between AOTC and this film, and will take up at least a quarter of the film - and will most probably open with a space battle. (as Lucas commented on the fact that AOTC only featured a short space duel, even though 'Star Wars' suggests many space battles. Also, as Episode 3 promises to be the 'ESB of the prequels' we may well have a battle at the start, as ESB did; the space battle could lead to a mix of ESB and AOTC's ground battles) The rumours of a new 'space locale' will probably come into play here; Republic Space Stations have been mooted, and Anakin flies a modified Jedi Starfighter at some point. As we haven't seen the Jedi Starfighter actually fighting, it could well be here])

[Mace Windu - along with much of the Jedi Order - will die in Episode 3's battle. However, it's doubtful he will be slain by a revenge-fuelled Boba Fett, as Fett will only be 13 here. Sam Jackson doesn't want to 'go our like a punk' so being shot by a 13-year-old is definately not on the sabacc cards]

[Perhaps the Clone Wars sees the demise of Count Dooku as well? Though even Christopher Lee doesn't know his character's role in Episode 3, Dooku may well be killed by Anakin here. As we have the Obi-Wan/Anakin duel to look forward to later on, this could be the time for a lightsaber duel, so that we don't have two climatic saber fights? Or, Dooku may even be killed by Darth Sidious, so that Anakin can become his new apprentice. It has been rumoured that Anakin is sent on a mission after the Clone Wars where he finds and kills Dooku. One thing's for sure, Yoda won't fight him again; Rick MacCallum stated Yoda won't be fighting at all in Ep3]

[After the Clone Wars we will see a more personal story, focusing on Anakin, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Padmé. Bail Organa will have a larger role here, and Alderaan will likely be visited]

[Eventually, Palpatine will declare himself Emperor, and the Galactic Empire will take over. It's been rumoured that a 'single catastrophic event changes the PT galaxy into the more familiar OT galaxy,' so maybe we'll see the Empire attacking an opposing planet? Perhaps even Coruscant, (though I don't know for what reason, as it's already controlled by Palpatine) or even Naboo (to show the beauty of the PT fall to the OT's dingy, dark look) It has been suggested that we could see the destruction of a planet, but not by the Empire; Anakin somehow destroys Neimoidia after learning (or coming to the false conclusion) that the Neimoidians were responsible for Padmé's death. However, this seems unlikely. For one, how could a single person destroy a planet? Even if Anakin used the Force, that would mean the more-powerful Palpatine could too, so the Death Star would be defunct. And two, I don't believe Padmé dies in Ep3, as Leia says she remembered her in RotJ]

[Finally, Anakin will fight Obi-Wan, fall into a molten pit and become Darth Vader. We will indeed see - and hear- Vader near the end, in full armour, for around 8 minutes (that is, James Earl Jones has around 8 minutes of dialogue, so we'll probably see Vader for longer than that]

[Yoda will flee to Dagobah (though it's possible we may not see the planet; he may just disappear completely, making his mention in ESB that more surprising) and Padmé will go to Alderaan with Bail and Leia. (she won't die in the film, as she has to be with Leia for a few years, as mentioned in ROTJ) Obi-Wan will go to Tatooine and deliver Luke to the Lars. The final shot is supposedly Obi-Wan walking off into (or away from) the twin sunset]

KNOWN FACTS

TIMELINE
  • Episode III will be released on May 25th 2005 - the 28th anniversary of Star Wars
  • Episode 3 takes place three years after AOTC, and nineteen before ANH
  • The Clone Wars will be ending in Episode 3. The big real-life Clone Wars multimedia project going on at the moment is happening in 'real-time;' three years until the film is out, and three years have passed in the film's timeline, so we'll be seeing the Clone Wars beginning to end in book form prior to the movie

PLOT

  • The film begins with the end of the Clone Wars, as well as the death of Mace Windu - and maybe Count Dooku? Republic Space Stations and Anakin's Jedi Starfighter are rumoured to feature. The Clone Wars, and surrounding events, should take up a third of the movie
  • The rest of the movie is a more 'personal' affair, as it centers on the four main characters; Anakin, Obi-wan, Padmé and Yoda
  • We will also see the formation of the Empire, plus a 'catastrophic event' that makes the prequel galaxy seem more like the original trilogy's worn, battered look
  • Anakin and Obi-wan battle on a lava planet, and Padmé gives birth to Luke and Leia. She does not die, but probably flees to Alderaan with Bail Organa
  • There is always a chase scene in Star Wars, so expect either an outright chase ( think speeder chase in AotC) or something that involves speed (like the Death Star trench in ANH)
  • Yoda also flees, to Dagobah, and Obi-wan takes Luke to Tatooine - though many fans believe Luke will be born on Dagobah, to back up his saying it seemed familiar in ESB. The final shots will be on Tatooine, perhaps of Obi-wan walking off into the sunsets

CHARACTERS
  • Future Rebel Admiral, Ackbar, might make a CGI appearance in Episode 3
  • Joel Edgerton (Owen Lars) has been confirmed, but Bonnie Piesse (Beru) has not. Cliegg will possibly have died before the film - perhaps of a broken heart
  • Darth Vader will be played by Hayden Christansen, (Anakin) not original Dave Prowse. James Earl Jones will return as the Dark Lord's voice
  • Daniel Logan (Boba Fett) will return for Episode 3, but as he will only be 13, it's unlikely he will avenge his father by killing Mace Windu, as many fans have speculated
  • Chewbacca may have a cameo in Episode 3, perhaps still played by Peter Mayhew
  • Hugh Jackman and Robery Carlyle were rumoured to have been approached by LucasFilm to play bad guys in Episode 3, but it seems they were just rumours
  • Christopher Lee (Count Dooku) will return for Episode 3, though he has kept quiet about his part so far. We know that Dooku will die, however, and Darth Vader takes his place as Sidious's apprentice
  • Dooku's former apprentice, Qui-Gon Jinn, (Liam Neeson) will also be returning, either in spirit form (like Ben Kenobi in ESB and ROTJ) or as voice only. (like his cameo in AOTC) His appearance should also clear up the 'disappearing Jedi' speculation
  • More speculation-quashing character returns; R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) are back, and have their memories erased, explaining why they don't remember important events from the prequels
  • Ian McDiarmid returns as Palpatine/Sidious, and should become the Emperor in Episode 3. His red-robed Royal Guards should also appear
  • Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best) will return also, perhaps to discover his mistake at allowing Palpatine emergency powers
  • Mace Windu (Samuel L Jackson) will die in Episode 3, though according to the actor, he won't be 'going out like some punk.' His fitting death should take place during the Clone Wars
  • Captain Typho (Jay Laga'aia) may also return
  • Will Tarkin (Peter Cushing) return for Episode 3? Gabriel Byrne says he has been considered for the film, and he may be playing the young Tarkin
  • It has been reported that something happens in Episode 3 to differentiate the clones from the stormtroopers. The clones will certainly be sporting a new look, anyway

LOCATIONS

  • The returning planets will be: Tatooine, (the last scenes will be set there) Coruscant and Kamino, (perhaps the cloning facilities are attacked?) plus, possibly, Naboo
  • There will be a new location, a lava planet, for Anakin and Obi-wan's duel. A snowy location has also been mooted, and there are rumours that the two could be combined (perhaps to symbolise the light and dark sides as Anakin falls into the lava?)
  • There will be five 'returning locations' for Episode 3; the Jedi Council chamber, the Senate, Palpatine's office and two from the OT: one from ANH, the other from ROTJ. These aren't yet known, but rumours point to the most popular choices as a Star Destroyer bridge and Dagobah (even though a Star Destroyer bridge wasn't seen in ANH...)
  • Possible shooting locations: Morocco, Australia, (Kamino actors?) Tunisia. (already filmed a scene in Episode 3 there) Shots of a volcano were also captured, and a 'rocky' location is on Lucas's list...

VEHICLES

  • Anakin will fly an upgraded Jedi Starfighter in Episode 3
  • The Millennium Falcon may make an appearance, and we'll find out just why Han Solo likes his ship so much...
  • Republic Space Stations may be featured in the film; the Republic uses them in orbit above wars, and deploys ships - including Jedi Starfighters - down to the planet
  • Perhaps we'll be seeing a Republic Starfighter, as rumours are circulating of a large opening space battle...shades of the TIE Fighter, maybe?
